It is of no surprise to see how the YMCA movement has mobilised to provide help, assistance and care to Ukraine, its people and all those affected by this 21st Century war.
Help and assistance is in the DNA of the YMCA Movement, ever present in peacetime and at time of conflict.
Throughout the 20th century’s two world conflicts, YMCA was a significant presence, both on the frontline and at home, offering material, educational and pastoral support.
Scores of courageous YMCA volunteers eased the misery and suffering of soldiers with places offering food, drink and a place to rest.
Today we see the YMCA once again making its presence known, helping the safe evacuation of civilians out of Ukraine, providing shelter, comfort and emergency aid at border crossing points, facilitating safe accommodation for displaced families and refugees and maintaining the continued operation of 17 YMCAs within Ukraine.
The YMCA effort is a global one representing the solidarity of the world’s largest youth charity to work together to help others and in particular young people and their communities.
As the war in Ukraine looks to be continue indefinitely, it is imperative that we secure sufficient resources to continue our much needed work and services.
It is for this reason that today, on the founder’s day of the YMCA Movement 178 years ago we launch this fundraising campaign to continue our legacy of serving others in need.
