„YMCA Europe is a working fellowship to strengthen movements where people grow in body, mind and spirit.“

Do you know the feeling that you discover muscles that you never were aware of having them ?

This is what happened to our President Mike Will and his colleague Brian Cruickshank from the Board of YMCA Aberdeen (Scotland).

In a fit of youthful recklessness Mike and Brian decided some time ago to participate in the worlds largest marching event, the 4-days marches in and around the city of Nijmegen (the Netherlands).

Because of Mike's age and Brian's solidarity they had to walk 50 kilometers every day last week from Tuesday 18th. till Friday 21st. July. Quite a challenge especially with temperatures over 30 degrees during most of these 4 days and starting every morning at 04.00 a.m..

But they were not the only ones. On Tuesday more than 42.000 participants from all over the world started with good courage and on Friday evening it was clear that about 38.000 participants had finished. Among them Mike and Brian.

I was happy to meet both at the finish line in Nijmegen after they had completed their 200 kilometer. Meeting with two heroes experiencing the existence of almost all muscles they have; with sore knees and ankles but being proud after having received their medal. Eternal fame is their part.

On the question if they will do it again in 2018, the answer was clear. "It was a great experience but no, not in 2018. Maybe in 2019..................because then we can walk the 40 kilometer".

We salute and congratulate Mike and Brian with this great achievement.
