The YMCA Europe Leadership Academy 2025 brought together 29 young leaders from 16 countries for a powerful year of learning, cultural exchange, and community impact.
Under the theme “Bridging Cultures: from personal transformation to community development,” the programme empowered participants to explore identity, values, peacebuilding, and organisational culture while designing real community projects that created meaningful change.
Two intensive non-formal education sessions—held in Malta and Northern Ireland—focused on personal growth, intercultural dialogue, project design, and good governance. Every participant rated the experience as excellent or very good, and all said they would recommend it to their peers.
One of the Leadership Academy’s strongest achievements was its 18 community projects, created and implemented directly by the young leaders. These initiatives reached 667 vulnerable people, including refugees, migrants, young people from rural areas, minorities, and those facing homelessness.
Projects ranged from emotional-intelligence workshops and digital inclusion training to anti-racism sessions, youth leadership programmes, intercultural dialogue events, and activities supporting mental health and social integration.
Throughout the year, participants consistently highlighted the importance of non-violent communication, organisational culture, and governance, recognising them as essential tools for leadership and sustainable community work. Many also emphasised the impact of learning about the history and realities of Northern Ireland, celebrating mistakes as part of growth, and forming profound international connections.
Testimonials reflect the transformative nature of the programme: participants reported increased confidence, stronger values, deeper cultural understanding, and a renewed motivation to contribute to their communities. Many described YLA as life-changing, eye-opening, and a space for meaningful friendships and personal growth.
The 2025 Leadership Academy has not only strengthened young leaders but also supported youth-led civil society organisations across Europe. The seeds planted through training, dialogue, and shared experiences will continue to grow – shaping more inclusive communities and inspiring the next generation of changemakers.
