On the occasion of the European Day of Solidarity Between Generations (29 April), YMCA participated in a high-level policy event at the European Parliament, engaging in a critical conversation on embedding intergenerational fairness into EU legislation.
Titled “Future-Fit Legislation: Mainstreaming Intergenerational Fairness,” the event was hosted by Members of the European Parliament Marc Angel, Anna Strolenberg, and Nikola Minchev. It brought together EU policymakers, thought leaders, and civil society organisations to explore how current laws and policies can better reflect the interests of both present and future generations.
Key speakers included Glenn Micallef, Commissioner for Intergenerational Fairness, Youth, Culture and Sport, and Camilla Brückner, Director of the UN/UNDP Brussels Representation Office. Their insights helped shape a compelling dialogue on how to institutionalise intergenerational equity in EU policy frameworks.
As the European Commission prepares to unveil its Intergenerational Fairness Strategy in the coming year, YMCA Europe is proud to contribute to this process. With our grassroots presence and youth-led initiatives across the continent, we are committed to championing policies that ensure fairness and opportunity for all generations – today and tomorrow.
At YMCA Europe, we believe that intergenerational solidarity is not only a value but a responsibility. We continue to promote this principle across our programmes and advocacy, empowering young people while honouring the wisdom and needs of older generations.
