YMCA STATEMENT ON THE RESTART OF THE WAR OVER NAGORNO KARABAKH

1st October 2020

“There should be only one fight in our world today, our shared battle against COVID-19”.

We are deeply concerned with the escalation of the conflict over Nagorno Karabakh (Artsakh) and with the full-scale war imposed on the people of the region since September 27.

Earlier this year the UN Secretary-General António Guterres appealed for an immediate ceasefire in all corners of the globe to reinforce international lifesaving action during this pandemic.

This war in Karabakh is the first vivid case of violation of the above appeal, thus we urge the international community to come together and use unrivaled measures for stopping it immediately.

We hope that the triggers and the initiators of this war will be disclosed and their actions qualified as bold disrespect of human rights and international humanitarian law.

We express deep regret at the loss of life and toll on both the civilian population, and military personnel - most of them 18 - 20 years old young men.

We convey our solidarity to our sisters and brothers of YMCA Artsakh in Nagorno Karabagh and pray for all the people that are being affected by this war.

We believe that peace and reconciliation have no alternatives. YMCA has outstanding legacy and ongoing efforts in conflict transformation work in the region, with YMCA Artsakh being a key partner in it. We do believe in the relevance and sustainability of this work.
