Youth Unify 2017: A Week of Growth and Connection in Romania
From 30 July to 5 August 2017, young leaders from across Europe gathered in Torockó, Romania, near Cluj, for Youth Unify 2017. Surrounded by stunning landscapes, the event offered a mix of learning, fellowship, and cultural exchange that participants described as both inspiring and transformative.
For many, Unify has become more than just a conference – it is a unique experience that continues to shape their personal and leadership journeys. One returning participant reflected: “You can say, what new can be in a conference you’ve already attended several times? But every time Unify opens new qualities in you, gives new ways of thinking, new knowledge, and new experiences.”
The programme featured interactive sessions on leadership, storytelling, and the values that guide YMCA’s work. Small group discussions encouraged participants to exchange perspectives, while workshops offered space for self-reflection and practical learning. Being part of the organising team gave some participants an additional layer of responsibility and ownership, further deepening their experience.
Equally important were the opportunities to connect with old friends and welcome new ones. The natural setting, described as “a piece of heaven,” provided the perfect backdrop for conversations, cultural exchange, and shared experiences.
Each Unify gathering also challenges participants to take their learnings back home. For one young leader, this meant introducing new teachings and discussions in their YMCA English club and childcare programmes. “Every time after participating in Unify I challenge myself,” they explained.
Despite some travel difficulties in reaching Romania, participants unanimously described the week as enriching, meaningful, and memorable. Youth Unify 2017 once again proved to be a platform where young people can grow as leaders, strengthen their connections, and carry forward the spirit of Unify into their communities.
