This is how the YMCA is strengthening communities and empowering young people in Albania – through incredible initiatives during the camping season.
There were about 400 children and young people that participated in our daily camps this summer, in Albania (more specifically in Tirana, Berat and Gramsh), thanks to the cooperation of the team at YMCA Albania with different stakeholders, such as Catholic Church Berat, Italian organisation “Volunteers of Sebino and Ravena”, Catholic Church Tirana, Jesuit Centre “Father Anton Luli” and community centre “Lets stay together” Tirana Municipality.
This summer, Gramsh and Uznova (two towns where the variety of cultural and outdoor activities is very poor) became lively centres of activity, learning, and cultural exchange through the organisation of special summer camps.
These camps were organised in close cooperation with the Italian volunteers from the organizations Volontari del Sebino and Ravenna and YMCA Albania, bringing together local children and youth in a unique and inspiring experience.
A Meeting of Cultures and Values
Amidst the beautiful nature of these areas, the camps offered young people a space for learning and enjoyment. They promoted recreation, solidarity, compassion, and cultural exchange. Italian and Albanian volunteers from Volontari del Sebino, the Catholic Church, and YMCA Albania brought diverse experiences, fostering mutual respect and understanding.
Activities and Learning
The camps offered activities centred on personal development and community support, such as art workshops, music, sports, and environmental education. Italian volunteers brought a European perspective, enhancing the international experience. YMCA Albania contributed to team-building games, leadership training, and discussions on youth social issues.
Building Lasting Friendships
The camping programs fostered strong bonds between participants and volunteers, with shared experiences creating friendships beyond cultural and geographical boundaries. The welcoming communities of Gramsh and Uznova encouraged an exchange of customs, stories, and life lessons.
Positive Impact on the Community
The summer camps had a lasting impact on the communities, offering children a safe space to learn and grow, while volunteers contributed meaningfully and enriched their own lives.
The partnership between the Catholic Church, Volontari del Sebino, and YMCA Albania highlighted the power of international cooperation. As the camps ended, participants were left with lasting memories, new friendships, and a stronger sense of responsibility, laying the groundwork for future impactful collaborations.
Camps in Tirana: embracing leadership for a greener and innovative future
These free camps for vulnerable children and youth focused on developing personal and social skills through leadership sessions, HP digital wellbeing courses, environmental actions, and creative workshops. Participants learned group problem-solving, explored nature, and gained insights into plants and environmental protection. They also engaged in outdoor activities and built lasting friendships through fun, cooperative games.
