In a world where digital literacy is no longer a luxury but a fundamental requirement for active citizenship, access to technology dictates opportunity, recognising this challenge, the YMCA / HP Digital Hubs initiative launched in Sweden just last year with an initial cohort of 8 pioneering local YMCAs.
Today, the network has expanded to over 15 Digital Hubs across Sweden, equipped with 127 distributed HP laptops.
The transformation since then has been remarkable; its rapid growth represents more than just an expanding hardware footprint.
Local YMCAs are turning spaces into vibrant, inclusive technology centres, ensuring that young people—regardless of their background—have a place to acquire digital skills, explore career pathways, and confidently step into the digital economy. Successfully marking a massive movement toward digital equity.

Beyond Screens: Building Real-World Competencies
Rather than simply offering passive internet access, Swedish YMCAs are structuring programming around practical, high-impact digital skills. The hubs leverage solutions like HP LIFE to offer training tailored directly to their community’s needs. Key activities across the hubs focus heavily on:
- Skilling and Digital Literacy: Providing formal coding groups (for youth aged 12–18), specialised homework support, and foundational digital literacy training.
- System Integration Support: Serving local adult populations by acting as training grounds where community members and staff upskill on modern payment systems, administrative platforms, and system migrations.
- Safe Spaces for Collaboration: Integrating hardware seamlessly into regular youth recreation centre hours, turning evening hangouts into natural opportunities for.
By lowering the barrier to entry, these spaces change how participants interact with technology. Young people are transitioning from passive screen consumers into active creators—writing code, solving logic problems, and navigating modern applications.
For example, at hubs like YMCA Kristinehamn, laptops have become an organic feature of daily evening activities, blending recreational support with digital empowerment.

Turning Numbers into Living Proof
The true value of the Digital Hubs initiative lies in the human transformations behind the data. When the program began, many participants faced a distinct disadvantage: lacking proper personal devices, reliable internet access, or the confidence to navigate advanced software. The hubs provided the turning point. Across the country, the spaces have successfully reached hundreds of unique beneficiaries, equipping them with essential future-proof skills.
According to Tommie Hansson, who serves as Operations Manager at KFUM Central and Digital Hub Lead, the introduction of the digital hub created an unexpected dual impact.
While young participants gathered weekly to learn foundational coding, local adult staff and community members utilised the exact same workstations to upskill on critical administrative and payment platforms—proving that localised tech access can elevate an entire ecosystem at once.
By offering hybrid opportunities (both in-person and online), the project has fostered deep digital inclusion, enhanced employability for young adults, and provided essential support to local educators shaping tomorrow’s leaders.

The evolution from 8 to over 15 Digital Hubs is just the beginning of this journey. With a robust infrastructure of 127 laptops and counting, Sweden’s YMCAs are proving that when corporate partnership meets community-led dedication, systematic gaps can be closed. Looking forward, the network is poised for continued growth, aiming to scale up advanced coding modules, expand digital entrepreneurship pathways via HP LIFE, and ensure no young person is left behind in the rapidly advancing digital age. Together with our partners, we are continuing to build an equitable framework where technology serves as the ultimate bridge to opportunity.
