It is time to look back at the very inception of our joint initiatives to support the communities affected by the ongoing war in Ukraine. More than a year ago, the devastating war has impacted the lives of so many – and it is the duty of the YMCA to continue its mission to support and provide shelter to those in need.
This is the beginning of our joint journey to Romania and Ukraine, supported by our colleagues at the Y of the USA, and assessing the needs, challenges, and opportunities of the YMCAs working with refugees at the grassroots level.
On September 17th, we had a great privilege and opportunity to enter Ukraine with our colleagues from YMCA Romania and the Y of the USA – this came as part of our field visits to assess and support the YMCAs working with refugees from Ukraine, throughout Europe.
During the visit, hosted by YMCA Romania, we connected with YMCA Karpaty in Verkhovyna. We were thoroughly impressed by the Ukrainian hospitality and we had the chance to share with the local team some of our plans for immediate and mid-term actions.
Our journey led us to better understand the initiatives, needs, and wants of the affected communities in Ukraine. We had the pleasure to experience the activities and sessions at the ROUA Community Centre in Baia Mare, North Romania.
The work that is done here by the team of YMCA Romania and the programs they deliver established the stepping stone of a strong and value-based community center welcoming all refugees and young people in a safe space.
This is once more proof that our collective support and investment at the grassroots level can bring together a committed team of leaders and change-makers – supporting so many during these difficult times.
