When the COVID-19 pandemic hit the Maltese islands YMCA opened its second shelter 'Y Communal Home' providing semi-independent living for families that ended up without a roof over their heads because of financial difficulties. The care program provided through this facility is 'Program Kisbet Serhan' which translates to 'achieving peace of mind'.
YMCA Malta was awarded the 2020 Sustainable Communities Awards for specialized housing on the 30th November 2020 by the Maltese National Housing Authority and the Ministry for Social Accommodation.
This award-winning project embarks YMCA in opening the third residential service.
A separate 'Y Communal Home' in the capital city of Malta, Valletta will open its doors to give service to those who are experiencing homelessness however with a special focus on individuals, families, and their pets, particularly those of over 60+ and those who have special needs and difficulties.
This award achieved by YMCA Malta has provided the YMCA with other large premises that can cater to up to 16 individuals and a fund of €350,000 to refurbish the house before openings its' doors to service.
YMCA Malta's National General Secretary states:
this new project in collaboration with the Government continues to strengthen voluntary organizations such as the YMCA to continue giving its' specialized service to those who are in need. This new space is the assurance for peace of mind to those elderly and others with special needs that when homeless and in need of a home and a YMCA family we will be there with new facilities, new service, and care to provide them with"
