Youth Unify 2016: Young Leaders Gather in Ukraine for Inspiration, Learning and Fellowship
From 21–27 August 2016, young YMCA leaders from across Europe came together in Verhovyna, Ukraine, for the annual Youth Unify leadership camp. Surrounded by the breathtaking Carpathian Mountains, the gathering created space for participants to exchange ideas, build friendships, and reflect on their roles as leaders within their communities and the wider YMCA movement.
The week combined structured discussions, leadership workshops, and small group conversations with moments of relaxation in nature. Hiking, enjoying the fresh mountain air, and exploring the forests of Ukraine provided participants with both rest and inspiration.
For many, the heart of the camp lay in the opportunity to connect deeply with others. “The days spent at Youth Unify were the most unforgettable and inspirational days I’ve experienced. From the first moment, I felt like I had known the participants forever—it was like a big family,” one participant reflected. Small group discussions stood out as highlights, offering honest conversations, peer learning, and mutual encouragement.
The camp also reaffirmed YMCA’s identity as a Christian ecumenical movement, giving participants the chance to openly share their personal stories, values, and motivations. “I was made sure that there are YMCA people for whom being a believer is a crucial thing & that they truly want to return YMCA to Christian roots,” shared another young leader.
The spirit of Unify was often compared to a “charger”—a source of energy and motivation that continues to inspire participants long after the event ends. As one attendee put it: “Whenever I think back on that exhausting, eventful and life-affirming week in the mountains, I can’t help but smile. It was mind-blowing to see familiar faces and meet new friends, all united around one idea.”
Youth Unify 2016 in Ukraine left participants not only with stronger leadership skills and international friendships, but also with a renewed sense of belonging to a movement that empowers young people to grow, serve, and make a difference in their communities.
