On 6 June, as the global YMCA family celebrates YMCA Day, we look ahead together to the next milestone for young people: World Youth Skills Day on 15 July.
This United Nations day focuses on equipping young people with skills for employment, decent work and entrepreneurship. In 2026, the theme “Skills for a Shared Future” underlines a simple idea: when one young person gains skills, entire communities become more resilient and better prepared for the future.
One movement, one shared moment
Skills in Action is the YMCA movement’s way of turning this theme into visible, collective action.
In the first half of July 2026, local YMCAs will run skills‑focused activities that respond to the realities of their communities – from digital and AI literacy to employability, creativity, communication and life skills. On 15 July, they will bring these stories together by sharing them on social media with the hashtag #YMCASkills2026.
Instead of a single event in one place, Skills in Action is a constellation of local moments:
- workshops in youth spaces,
- conversations in schools,
- coaching on the sports field,
- discovery in front of a first laptop.
Together, they show what “skills for a shared future” looks like in practice – young people learning side by side, supported by trusted adults and connected to opportunities beyond their neighbourhoods.
From stories to impact
Behind each story is something bigger: a global movement deliberately investing in young people’s capacity to shape the future. Through digital hubs, mentoring and free online learning opportunities, YMCA and partners are expanding access to skills that open doors, including through YMCA Europe Online Courses.
This action is implemented under the wider YMCA–HP partnership for digital equity, which builds on HP–YMCA Digital Hubs and HP LIFE while also connecting with other YMCA programmes to expand access to future-oriented skills for more young people and communities.
By bringing these efforts together under one campaign, Skills in Action helps turn local experiences into a shared impact picture. It shows young people as skilled, creative problem‑solvers – and helps partners and supporters see the scale and diversity of what YMCAs are already doing for youth skills around the world.
Celebrating courage, creativity and inclusion
Skills in Action will also highlight the courage and creativity it takes to keep showing up for young people. A set of campaign prizes – with a total value of €5,000 – will recognise organisations that reach many young people, tell powerful stories or design especially inclusive activities that centre those who are often left out.
At its heart, this is not about competition. It is about learning from approaches that work and inspiring others to adapt them in their own context, so that more young people can access the skills they need for the future they want.

An invitation
Skills in Action is an invitation to everyone who cares about young people’s future. For YMCAs, it is a chance to stand together and say: this is what our movement looks like when we invest in youth skills at scale. For partners and allies, it is a window into a network that is already present in communities, already trusted and ready to do more.
On World Youth Skills Day 2026, as the world talks about “Skills for a Shared Future”, the YMCA movement will have thousands of real‑life examples to show what that future can be – stories of young people who feel more confident, more connected and more ready to shape the world they inherit.
If you’d like to follow along, watch for #YMCASkills2026 on 15 July – and listen closely to the young voices at the centre of Skills in Action.
For partners such as HP, this is also a way to see how investments in digital equity translate into real-life stories of young people gaining confidence, skills and opportunities in their communities.
