Empowering Governance: A Guide for Newly Elected NGO Board Members
Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) are often founded with passion and a vision to create positive change in the world. This initial drive frequently leads to success, which founders and members strive to sustain to remain relevant and effective for the communities they serve.
As NGOs, we are responsible for the changes we create and for the trust placed in us by the people we serve. To honor this responsibility, we must be sustainable, professional, and effective in our endeavors. Our impact must be sustainable.
To achieve this, we must become proficient governors and managers, treating our organizations as unique instruments for creating long-lasting change both locally and globally. This guide focuses on the Board, the principal governing body with delegated power from the Members’ Assembly (Conference) to run the organization.
This document is designed for newly elected Board members or those nominated to a governing position for the first time. It aims to build awareness of the key functions, duties, and routines of Board members, ensuring they are well-equipped to lead effectively and sustain the organization’s mission and impact.
By providing this guide, we hope to empower Board members with the knowledge and tools needed to govern responsibly and steer their organizations toward continued success and lasting positive change.
The guide was created as a part of Movement Strengthening approach of YMCA Europe. It is a system of assisting National Movements in the process of self-assessment and producing relevant organisational changes to enhance its capacity, sustainability and social impact.
