On November 23rd, our representative were privileged to partake in an inspiring conference, “Personal Journeys, Audacious Actions, and Global Impact,” held at the West University of Timisoara in Romania and having as keynote speaker the Nobel Prize Laureate Nadia Murad.
This extraordinary event brought together over 300 local youth leaders, professionals, civil society figures, students, and professors, offering a unique opportunity to expand horizons and glean invaluable insights into strength, resilience, peace-building, and advocacy for the voiceless within an enriching context.
With compelling narratives, Nadia guided the audience through her remarkable life journey — surviving captivity by ISIS, years as a hostage, a refugee, and ultimately emerging as a leading advocate for survivors of genocide and sexual violence.
Nadia Murad stands as a true leader and role model for many young people, epitomizing passion and unwavering determination — qualities that resonate deeply with the YMCA movement. Her foundation, Nadia’s Initiative, actively contributes to “building a better, safer, and more just world for future generations,” aligning seamlessly with the core mission and vision of YMCA. Grounded in the four pillars of Vision 2030, our mission persists as a catalyst for change in communities and connections worldwide.
Being present at such a prestigious institution and having the opportunity to listen, learn, and connect with a leader as inspiring as Nadia Murad was a great honor. She is not merely an echo but a genuine voice that inspires action.
As a movement, we have much to glean from esteemed young leaders like Nadia. Their examples encourage us to fully embrace and embody our mission as YMCA in peace-building, advocacy, and the realization of Vision 2030. This vision unites us with inspiring leaders globally, fostering a collective commitment to positive change.
Our gratitude extends to this memorable evening, and we are optimistic about forging continued collaborations toward youth advocacy and peace-building across the YMCA.
