On Sunday, September 24th, thousands of ethnic Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh began their mass exodus toward Armenia, after Azerbaijan’s military operation grabbing the control of the region from the Russian military, stationed in the region. The ethnic cleansing of 120’000 Armenians is in the making. Armenia stands ready to welcome all the refugees, but hardly it will be able to handle the crisis alone.
YMCA President and Nagorno-Karabakh’s Parliament Member, David Melkumyan, is one of the key envoys at negotiations with Azerbaijan amid efforts to stop the violence. Hundreds killed and injured. There was a vibrant and resilient YMCA in Nagorno Karabakh. Its existence is under question now, its members amongst those suffering and in move.
The YMCA has a longstanding tradition of responding to humanitarian crises, and this time should not be an exception. Through our Roots for Peace and Generation Next projects YMCA Europe has significant capacities in place in Armenia, including staff led by our Executive Secretary, Vardan Hambardzumyan.
In collaboration with local YMCAs and other partner organisations in the country, we are fully committed to do our best in offering relief and rehabilitation to those seeking assistance.
As an immediate response, we are launching this fundraising campaign to gather funds that will enable us to provide vital support to those in need. Your contributions will help them with a new beginning and a safer life in Armenia.
