From 22–25 May, YMCA Europe brought together over 120 delegates from across the continent for its General Assembly 2025 under the theme ‘Agora – Active Citizenship – Education for Participation’.
Held at Full Circle House in Brussels, this year’s Assembly marked a powerful convergence of governance, youth leadership, and international cooperation — all in the heart of Europe.
For the first time, YMCA Europe hosted its Annual General Assembly at its new seat in Brussels, reinforcing our strategic presence near EU institutions and our long-term commitment to civic engagement across Europe. President Emma Osmundsen opened the Assembly by welcoming participants to “our home, which is also your home,” setting a tone of ownership, inclusion, and renewed purpose.
Key Highlights:
Strategic Governance and Constitution Review
The Assembly addressed important governance matters, including the proposed constitutional review, allowing space for meaningful dialogue and input from members. Delegates also voted on reports and updates from the President, Secretary General, and Treasurer, reaffirming the organisation’s shared mission and direction.
Refugees Conference and Humanitarian Focus
In parallel, the Refugees Conference gathered practitioners and advocates to share best practices in supporting displaced communities. YMCA’s longstanding commitment to humanitarian work was reaffirmed, with special emphasis on the response to the war in Ukraine and the collective efforts of our national movements.
Welcoming Global Partners and Friends
The opening day featured warm messages and participation from a diverse group of international partners and allies. We had the honour of welcoming representatives from the World Scouting Bureau in Brussels, the European Youth Forum, Y’s Men Europe, the Conference of European Churches, and the Institute for Economics and Peace.
We also embraced the presence of our dear friends and colleagues from World YMCA, The Y (USA), YMCA Japan, and the Indian YMCA in London, a true celebration of global solidarity and shared vision.
Youth Advocacy at the European Parliament
A standout moment of the Assembly was our visit to the European Parliament, where young YMCA leaders from across the continent joined an inspiring panel discussion with Philipp Schulmeister, Director of Campaigns at the European Parliament.
The session offered a unique space to exchange views on youth participation, democracy, and the role of civil society in shaping the future of Europe.
AI and the Future: YMCA Steps In
We had the pleasure of welcoming Gerardo Franco, Director – Skills for Social Impact, Western Europe at Microsoft, for a powerful plenary on the opportunities and ethical challenges presented by Artificial Intelligence. Gerardo also introduced the Introduction to Artificial Intelligence course, a joint initiative of Founderz, Microsoft, and YMCA, designed to equip young people and staff with practical digital skills for an evolving world.
Workshops, Culture and Community
Workshops throughout the event explored YMCA Europe’s key pillars – from digital empowerment and peacebuilding to youth advocacy and movement strengthening. Cultural evenings, live music, and a strong sense of community added warmth and energy to the programme.
Recognition of Leadership and Service
A heartfelt recognition ceremony honoured Jan Nissen, who has played a significant role in shaping YMCA Europe’s direction, along with Ukrainian YMCA leaders Oksana, Viktor and others who concluded their terms after years of courageous and dedicated service. Their leadership – particularly through times of conflict and adversity – was celebrated with deep gratitude and applause, symbolising the strength and unity of our movement.
Showcasing Innovation: The YMCA Digital Corner
For the first time, the General Assembly featured a dedicated Digital Corner — a live demonstration space showcasing how a simple, adaptable setup can bring digital education to life in any YMCA setting. Equipped with laptops, a digital banner, and real-time content, the corner served as a practical model for replication across national movements. It also reinforced YMCA Europe’s ongoing commitment to digital skilling as a key priority, ensuring young people are empowered with the tools and knowledge to thrive in an increasingly digital world.
Launch of Friends of YMCA Europe campaign
The campaign was officially launched among the delegates attending the General Assembly and also reaching out to individuals, partners and YMCAs. The response was encouraging as the result of the launch was truly visible through immediate donations received.
Moving Forward
In her annual address, President Emma reflected on a year of growth, resilience, and increasing visibility: “We have remained strong in our commitment to ensure youth can reach their full potential.” Secretary General Juan Simons presented impact data and updates, highlighting the organisation’s growing partnerships with key actors including HP, Accenture, Bread for the World, the European Union, and national YMCAs.
The Assembly concluded with renewed motivation and a shared commitment to deepen YMCA’s work across Europe and beyond.
We warmly thank all national YMCAs, delegates, Executive Committee, staff, volunteers, and partners for making this Assembly a meaningful and forward-looking milestone for our movement.
