This Friday is a special day for Greenhill YMCA in Northern Ireland – its going to celebrate its 101st birthday.
Greenhill is the YMCA Ireland residential and outdoor education centre. It started in 1914 and proceeded to provide vocational training and support to the unemployed during the 1930s and finally was established as an outdoor education Centre in the 1960s. In 1992 it expanded its services to act as a centre for reconciliation during the NI conflict. This year 10,000 young people will attend the Centre, which is staffed by 14 international volunteers.
There are lots of things happening on Friday night – a praise service, a celebration meal, an international link up and a presentation by friends from Liberia about the Ebola crisis. Don’t send us a birthday card instead during the dinner we will be showing a live screen of tweets of greetings from throughout the world – it would be a great pleasure to the staff and volunteers who work at Greenhill to receive a greeting from you – so if you use twitter send @ymcaireland a greeting with the hashtag #ymcaweek in the message and we will get a understanding of what a big international movement we are! You can send the message anytime during Friday to be included on the Screen.
