The YMCA movement joined millions of people around the world in mourning and honouring Pope Francis, who returned to the Home of the Father last week.
Jorge Mario Bergoglio, widely admired as a Pope of peace, humility, and compassion, leaves behind a profound legacy of reconciliation, global solidarity, and tireless advocacy for the dignity of every human being.
Pope Francis will be remembered for his consistent closeness to those suffering from conflict, social exclusion, and displacement. A strong advocate for Christian unity and dialogue with other religions, he led significant reforms within the Catholic Church and touched the hearts of millions from different cultures and spiritual backgrounds through his humble and mission-driven leadership.
The YMCA shares a special connection with Jorge Mario Bergoglio, who during his time as Cardinal in Buenos Aires developed a close relationship with YMCA Argentina. His commitment to social justice and to serving the most vulnerable aligned closely with the YMCA’s values, making him a respected ally and inspiration for the movement.
In 2012, just a few weeks before his election as Pope, Cardinal Bergoglio met with Juan Simoes Iglesias, Secretary General of YMCA Europe, during a visit organised by YMCA Argentina’s National General Secretary, Norberto Rodriguez.
Saturday, April 26th, YMCA Europe had the deep honour of being officially represented at Pope Francis’ State Funeral at St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican. The YMCA was given a preferential place near the altar, alongside representatives of various Churches and Christian expressions, recognising the YMCA’s historic contribution to unity among diverse faith traditions.
Reflecting on the experience, Juan Simoes Iglesias, YMCA Europe`s Secretary General said:
“It was a truly moving experience to represent our YMCA family at the farewell of such an extraordinary global leader. Pope Francis’ life reminds us that standing for peace, justice, and the dignity of every person transcends boundaries and faith traditions. His encouragement of dialogue, solidarity, and compassion will continue to inspire the YMCA movement for generations to come.”
The ceremony was filled with references to Pope Francis’ enduring legacy rooted in social justice, peace, and a deep concern for society’s most vulnerable.
On behalf of the global and European YMCA movements, sincere thanks were extended to the YMCA Italy Foundation and Federation, as well as to the Vatican’s Secretary of State and the Ministry for Unity of Christians, for their generous invitation and support during this important moment of remembrance.
Pope Francis’ spirit of humility, compassion, and commitment to unity will live on in the hearts of many – including the YMCA, which he inspired with his message and example.
