During our recent visit to ΧΑΝΘ – YMCA Thessaloniki, we had the immense pleasure of experiencing first-hand the vibrant life, impactful programmes, and pioneering initiatives that continue to position this YMCA as a cornerstone of community development in Greece.
One of the highlights of our visit was the live sessions held at the YMCA-HP Digital Community Hub, a dynamic space where digital equity meets youth empowerment. Thanks to the support and resources provided by HP, the Hub offers an inclusive learning environment where young leaders can enhance their digital skills.
This initiative is particularly crucial as it bridges the digital divide and facilitates wider access to educational resources for all. Witnessing the upcoming camp leaders engage with digital learning opportunities underscored the meaningful work the YMCA is doing to prepare young people for a future where digital competencies are essential.
Beyond digital innovation, we were truly inspired by the energy and enthusiasm of the graduates of YMCA Thessaloniki’s Leadership Academy.
Over 100 young leaders are now embarking on their summer camp journeys — a transformational experience fostering connection, learning, and growth within the YMCA community. Their dedication to leading and mentoring the next generation is a testament to the YMCA’s enduring mission to empower young people.
The visit also offered a broader view into the impressive infrastructure and community outreach that define YMCA Thessaloniki.
The centre boasts a rich array of facilities, including a heritage building, a fascinating basketball museum, extensive gym and sports amenities, and one of the oldest basketball courts in Greece. The importance of sport, culture, and history is deeply interwoven into the fabric of ΧΑΝΘ, providing a strong foundation for community life.
A particularly memorable moment was seeing the centre come alive on a Friday evening, where over 1,000 young people participated in activities ranging from sports to digital workshops. This vibrant atmosphere illustrated how the YMCA serves as a vital platform for youth development, offering opportunities that help expand their horizons in multiple dimensions.
We were warmly welcomed by the passionate team at YMCA Thessaloniki, including an insightful guided tour led by Emma Symeonidou. Through this tour, we explored the heritage spaces, discovered the realities of grassroots programming, and gained valuable insights into the challenges and aspirations of the community. The commitment of the staff and volunteers in delivering impactful activities across all departments – from social action to sports and digitalisation – truly embodies the spirit of the YMCA movement.
YMCA Thessaloniki stands as a shining example of how tradition and innovation can be harmoniously blended to serve the evolving needs of communities. We are grateful for the opportunity to witness their outstanding work and look forward to continuing to support and celebrate their efforts across Europe.
