Across Europe, local YMCAs work every day to support young people and communities through programmes focused on wellbeing, education, employment, inclusion and personal development.
They also help people connect with healthcare, social services and other forms of essential support.
However, reaching these programmes and services is not always easy. The cost of travel, limited public transport, safety concerns or individual mobility needs can prevent people from participating – even when the right support is available.
To help address this barrier, YMCA is partnering with Uber to launch a one-year Ride Voucher Pilot.
Through the partnership, Uber ride vouchers will help participating YMCAs connect people with the programmes, services and opportunities they need.
The pilot will be delivered by YMCA Dublin in Dublin, Ireland; YMCA Villeurbanne in the Lyon area of France; YMCA Chiltern Group across Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire in the United Kingdom; and YMCA Ukraine in Lviv.
Each of these YMCAs works closely with its community and understands the practical challenges people face. This local knowledge will allow them to use the vouchers where transport support can make a meaningful difference – from helping a young person attend education, training, or community activity to enabling someone to reach a healthcare appointment, access essential services or participate in a YMCA programme.
The pilot builds on the work these YMCAs already deliver. By helping to overcome mobility barriers, Uber is supporting local YMCA teams to extend the reach and impact of their programmes, ensuring that more people can access opportunities, receive support and participate in community life.
Learning from local experience
Throughout the pilot, the participating YMCAs will gather insights into how better access to mobility can strengthen their work and improve outcomes for the people they support.
The experience of the four locations will help Uber and YMCA understand where ride vouchers can have the greatest impact and how this type of partnership could support communities in the future.
Together, Uber and YMCA are helping turn essential journeys into pathways to support, participation and opportunity.
