What happens when a young person discovers they can create something with technology, instead of only using it?
That first spark is what EU Code Week celebrates. Taking place from 10–25 October 2026, this Europe-wide initiative invites schools, libraries and community groups to make coding and digital creativity accessible through hands-on activities.
For YMCA Digital Hubs, the connection is immediate.
However, for millions of young people across Europe, entering the world of coding, artificial intelligence, or digital creativity requires more than an annual campaign.
It requires a safe, accessible, and trusted local space where they feel empowered to learn at their own pace without fear of failure. While high-level European policy frameworks set the overarching vision for innovation, our community-based Digital Hubs bridge the crucial gap between ambition and everyday reality by providing continuous, human-centred guidance that transforms initial curiosity into lasting digital confidence.

Overcoming the Barrier: The Power of Local Support
Despite the growing demand for tech skills across the job market, many young people face steep barriers to entry that prevent them from participating in the modern digital economy. High hardware costs, unreliable internet access, and a lack of experienced mentors often leave marginalised youth excluded from educational opportunities.
Furthermore, when technical learning environments feel overly formal or academic, beginners often hesitate to take the first step. Our YMCA’s Community Hubs redefine this entry point by offering familiar, non-formal learning spaces where young people can experiment with technology, make mistakes without judgment, and build practical skills alongside supportive peer mentors who understand their unique backgrounds.

Three ways YMCA Digital Hubs bring future skills closer to home
Across the European continent, our local YMCA Digital Hubs demonstrate how trusted community spaces turn digital learning into tangible opportunities through verified, hands-on activities tailored to local needs:
- Python Programming & AI Storytelling in Armenia: Through the Roots and Next Youth Foundation Armenia’s Digital Hub, young people aged 8–18 engaged with structured education ranging from foundational Scratch coding to advanced Python programming and AI in filmmaking. By combining technological logic with creative storytelling—and reinforcing team learning through community camp experiences—the hub builds digital literacy, confidence, and career pathways in the evolving tech economy.
- Skill Building & Educational Resilience in Ukraine: At YMCA Kremenchuk, ongoing computer science programs and specialised Python courses provide teenagers and university students with critical technical skills. By offering accessible, hands-on instruction to overcome academic gaps—particularly during periods of online displacement—the hub restores student confidence, aids exam success, and keeps young tech learners on track toward technology careers.
- Mental Health Inclusion & Applied Tech in Malta: Through YMCA Malta, young adults experiencing mental health challenges receive workplace technology training and practical hands-on experience. Highlighting this impact, a young intern utilised hub resources to develop a customised intake application that streamlines data entry for local homeless services, directly merging software creation with real-world community solutions.

Building Confidence and Opening Pathways for the Future
When digital inclusion initiatives couple structured local support with access to modern tools, the personal and practical outcomes extend far beyond writing lines of code. Within this year, across our network of 578 active Digital Hubs, our joint initiative has reached 736K total direct beneficiaries—including youth, adults, and educators.
Our focus areas directly address future-ready competencies, with 17.6% dedicated to digital literacy, 22.7% to digital skilling, and 23.1% to expanding access to technology. EU Code Week serves as a vital momentum-builder for Europe’s broader digital ecosystem, and our community hubs act as the local execution engine for these campaign goals, ensuring that October’s enthusiasm translates into year-round learning opportunities for youth in every neighbourhood.

As the European Commission celebrates EU Code Week this October, the moment to take action is now. Whether your YMCA is hosting a beginner coding club, an AI discovery workshop, or a creative tech lab, you can pin your local activities on the interactive map by registering your activity on the EU Code Week platform to showcase our collective movement. Together, we can ensure that every young person—regardless of background or income—has equal access to the tools, skills, and opportunities of the future.
Let us keep driving this momentum together, scaling inclusive digital programs that empower young leaders and build a truly equitable digital future for all.
